The Italian Wine Routes Federation is partner of the CarTES project

The Federation for Italian Wine Routes is partner of the CarTES project (Charter for the Sustainable Wine and Food Tourist) whose main scope is to provide a vademecum for the tourist in order to allow him to experience the territory and its peculiarities respecting the environment, the culture and the local community. The Card is edited by the Italian Association for Food&Wiine Tourism, presided over by Roberta Garibaldi, in collaboration with Associazione Nazionale Città dell’Olio, Associazione Nazionale Città del Vino, Iter Vitis Itinerario Culturale del Consiglio d’Europa, Terranostra-Coldiretti and the Federation.

The handbook in 10 points

In a world with limited resources, where we consume more than is actually available, adopting a sustainable approach when traveling is no longer a choice, but a necessity.

By reading the complete Guide, you’ll learn about sustainable practices you can easily adopt on your next trips, to fully appreciate the richness of local food and wine while minimizing the impact on the environment, society, and culture of the area you’re visiting.

  1. Eat with your head and heart
Prefer local, seasonal, and organic food. Reduce waste and respect those who work the land.
  2. Follow the Mediterranean Diet
Healthy, tasty, with a low environmental impact, and a source of Italian pride recognized by UNESCO.
  3. Discover local areas through flavors
Look for DOP, IGP, and TSG products and visit markets, farms, and artisans of fine food.
  4. Support small producers
Recognize those who preserve traditions and preserve the local food and wine identity.
  5. Travel green
Use trains, bikes, or shared transportation. Move slowly to truly experience the places.
  6. Choose authentic destinations
Explore villages, rural areas, and destinations that focus on sustainability.
  7. Live slowly and stay a little longer
Avoid “hit-and-run” trips: truly stopping means learning and contributing.
  8. Reduce waste and plastic
Bring a water bottle, reusable bag, and separate waste. Small gestures, big impact.
  9. Save energy and water
Be responsible even on vacation: a shorter shower or the right temperature in your room are all it takes.
  10. Respect and share
Learn from local communities, pass on culinary traditions, and share your sustainable experience.
