The Road to Sustainability

On the occasion of World Sustainable Gastronomy Day (June 18), we celebrate the virtuous link between tourism and environmental responsibility with the initiative The Road to Sustainability, promoted in collaboration with CARTES – the Charter for the Sustainable Food and Wine Tourist.

The Federation is a partner of the CARTES project, which aims to provide tourists with a practical guide for experiencing a destination’s food and wine culture while respecting the environment, local culture, and community. The Charter is curated by the Italian Association of Food and Wine Tourism, chaired by Roberta Garibaldi, in collaboration with the National Association of Olive Oil Cities, National Association of Wine Cities, Iter Vitis Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, Terranostra-Coldiretti, and the Federation.

“The Road to Sustainability was created to foster greater awareness among travelers, encouraging them to reflect on the importance of adopting sustainable behaviors even while enjoying culinary experiences. Simple actions—like choosing local products, respecting the land, or supporting environmentally conscious businesses—can be part of a broader and lasting cultural shift.

During their visit to one of the participating companies, tourists are invited to take part in a simple yet meaningful experience: by scanning a QR code, they can access a brief guide with tips on sustainable food and wine tourism. After reading it, they can fill out a short online form to confirm their personal commitment. In return, they will receive a complimentary tasting, a symbolic gesture of appreciation for supporting a more responsible way of traveling.

In a global context where natural resources are increasingly limited, sustainability is no longer an option—it is a necessity. Tourism can and must play its part through concrete actions that engage both visitors and hosts. The Road to Sustainability is an invitation to make every local experience a moment of learning, growth, and respect.

We believe that every stop along the way can become an opportunity to share a different kind of tourism: more authentic, more conscious, and more deeply connected to local identity and environmental balance. With the support of local businesses, wine and food routes, and the active participation of visitors, this initiative aims to build a virtuous network that enhances local excellence and promotes new, more sustainable tourism models.
